Lesson Plan

Final Reflection

What did you learn from designing the CALL lessons?

I learned and practiced how to use four digital tools for lesson planning. The first is chatGPT, used for lesson inspiration and grammar check. I would give the specific prompts to make chatGPT generate some ideas or suggestions for me. Then, I used PaGamO to help students review all the vocabulary and sentence patterns we learned last week. I would have some questions, including multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blank questions, for students to finish at the beginning of each lesson. Also, I used YouTube to find some video sources, such as e-books, background music, and timers for group activities. I first used some screenshots from an e-book video and pasted them on the slides to share the story with students.

However, I failed to motivate the students by this. Maybe it’s because my teaching skills were not well or the story content was too simple for them. Apart from this, I played background music throughout the class at first, but it was so loud and annoying that students' attention was away from the lesson, and they couldn’t hear me. Thus, I only used it in the group activities for the rest of the class. The video I used in the activities was a 7-minute timer. I showed it on the electronic screen, so students could more concentrate on their tasks, and I could manage the time better as well.

Moreover, I used Canva to design all the slides, name tags (for me to connect with the students as soon as possible), Thank-You cards, and worksheets for each lesson. I put some important information on the slides, such as dates, my name (teacher’s name), class rules, and agenda, so the students would know how the lesson went. Also, the worksheet played an important role in my lesson. All the vocabulary, sentences, questions, and drills were on it. The students had to finish them based on what they learned, and I could know their learning situation by their answers on the worksheets.

How did the design of the CALL lessons enrich your professional knowledge?

For analysis, I know how to use various analysis tools, including analysis reports and pre-tests, to better understand the students’ English proficiency levels in a more systematic way. For designing, I know how to generate lesson plans with the aid of ChatGPT and other tools, ensuring that the lesson plans include comprehensive information, such as the topic, students’ objectives, and the different parts of the lesson at specific times. In terms of designing and developing, I learned how to generate all the materials, which should include many pictures and supplementary information.

For implementing, this is actually my first time teaching English in person, and I had the opportunity to learn some useful teaching skills, such as how to give clear instructions with confidence. However, I recognize that there are still something for me to improve. Finally, for evaluation, I know how to assess their progress in language learning and confidence through post-test scores, PaGamO, and their performances in class. Overall, I have gained a lot of useful knowledge and relevant strategies, through the design of the CALL lessons.
