What did you learn from designing the CALL lessons?

Designing the CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) lessons provided me with valuable insights into effectively integrating technology and online tools to create engaging and interactive learning experiences. Here is a detailed breakdown of what I learned:

Utilizing Canva for Assessments
Implementation: I used Canva to create engaging pre-tests and post-tests. Students were asked to rate each question from 1 to 5 stars, making the assessment process enjoyable and interactive.
Learning Outcome: This approach made assessments more engaging for students, helping reduce test anxiety and encouraging honest feedback about their understanding and confidence.

Incorporating a Points Table
Implementation: I developed a points table system where students could earn points for their participation and performance, which they could later redeem for gifts.
Learning Outcome: This gamification strategy motivated students to participate actively and perform better, enhancing their learning experience through a reward-based system.

Using Cool English for Assignments and Quizzes
Implementation: Cool English was used to distribute assignments and quizzes. This platform provided a structured and convenient way for students to practice their skills outside of class time.
Learning Outcome: It allowed for consistent practice and assessment, helping me track student progress and identify areas needing improvement.

Engaging with Wordwall for Vocabulary Review
Implementation: I employed Wordwall to create interactive games and flashcards for vocabulary review. This tool was particularly useful for making vocabulary practice fun and interactive.
Learning Outcome: The interactive nature of Wordwall helped reinforce vocabulary through repetition and engagement, making it easier for students to retain new words.

Enhancing Comprehension with Jamboard
Implementation: Jamboard was used to connect English words with pictures, ensuring that students could visually associate terms with their meanings.
Learning Outcome: This visual aid helped improve comprehension and retention, especially for visual learners, by providing a clear and engaging way to learn new vocabulary.

Sparking Interest with Short Videos
Implementation: I incorporated short videos from Junyi and YouTube to spark students' interest and introduce new topics in a dynamic way.
Learning Outcome: Videos provided a diverse range of content and contexts, making learning more relatable and engaging for students. They also served as a great tool for listening practice and cultural exposure.

Structuring Lessons with PowerPoint Presentations
Implementation: PowerPoint presentations were used to structure lessons, including the course topic, pre-class guesses, outlines, and activity pages.
Learning Outcome: This structured approach helped keep the lessons organized and ensured that all necessary components were covered systematically.

Teaching Autonomy with Cambridge Dictionary & Google Translation
Implementation: I demonstrated how to use the Cambridge Dictionary and Google Translation to look up words and understand their meanings.
Learning Outcome: This taught students how to be more autonomous in their learning, equipping them with tools to continue learning outside of class.

Online Teaching with Google Meet
Implementation: Using Google Meet for online teaching broke down geographical barriers, allowing me to connect with students scattered across rural areas. Real-time interaction and feedback through facial expressions and emojis enriched the learning experience.
Learning Outcome: Online teaching through Google Meet ensured that students remained engaged and connected, regardless of their location. The use of CMC tools like Google Meet or Zoom, coupled with reliable internet and proficient participants, significantly impacted the effectiveness of language instruction.

Embracing Multimodal Communication
Implementation: The use of multimodal communication, including visual, auditory, and interactive elements, enhanced interaction and engagement in language learning.
Learning Outcome: This comprehensive approach catered to different learning styles and needs, making lessons more inclusive and effective.

Through these experiences, I learned how to create a more engaging, interactive, and effective learning environment. The integration of various tools and technologies not only enhanced my teaching but also provided students with a richer, more diversified learning experience.

How did the design of the CALL lessons enrich your professional knowledge?

Designing the CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) lessons significantly enriched my professional knowledge through various stages: analyzing, designing & developing, implementing, and evaluating. Each stage incorporated key educational principles such as student-centered learning, multimodal instruction, active learning, formative assessment, and reflective practice.

Analyzing
Principles Applied: Needs Analysis, Formative Assessment, Student-Centered Learning
Process: I began by conducting pre-tests and surveys to gather data on my students' needs and English proficiency levels. This initial analysis helped me identify that my students, primarily in grades four to six, needed significant improvement in speaking and listening skills. By understanding their current abilities and preferred learning styles, I could tailor the lessons to better meet their needs.
Impact: This step was crucial for ensuring that the lessons were relevant and targeted, thus enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.

Designing & Developing
Principles Applied: Active Learning, Technology Integration, Gamification, Student-Centered Learning
Process: In this phase, I learned to utilize various online tools to create engaging and interactive teaching materials. For instance:
Wordwall and Jamboard were used for vocabulary and sentence structure practice, fostering active learning through interactive games and activities.
Canva was employed to design pre-tests and post-tests in a fun way, asking students to rate each question and thereby making the assessment process more engaging.
Google Meet facilitated real-time interaction and multimodal communication, breaking down geographic barriers and enhancing engagement through facial expressions and emojis.
Short videos from platforms like Junyi and YouTube were incorporated to spark interest and provide diverse learning stimuli.
PowerPoint presentations structured the lessons, including topic introductions, warm-up activities, outlines, and detailed activity pages, ensuring a coherent and organized delivery.
Cambridge Dictionary and Google Translate were demonstrated to help students develop autonomous learning skills by looking up and understanding new words.
Impact: By integrating these tools, I was able to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that promoted active participation and engagement.

Implementing
Principles Applied: Multimodal Instruction, Reflective Practice, Continuous Improvement
Process: During implementation, I adhered to the lesson plans while remaining flexible to adjust based on student responses. Key activities included: Observing student reactions and engagement in real-time, allowing for immediate pedagogical adjustments. Using tools like Google Meet to facilitate real-time interaction and feedback, enhancing the learning experience despite physical distances. Keeping detailed lesson records and reviewing teaching videos after each session to reflect on my performance and identify areas for improvement.
Impact: This stage emphasized the importance of being adaptive and reflective, ensuring that my teaching strategies remained effective and responsive to student needs.

Evaluating
Principles Applied: Formative Assessment, Student Feedback, Reflective Practice
Process: Evaluation was conducted through continuous formative assessments and soliciting student feedback: Asking students reflective questions at the end of each class, such as their satisfaction with the lesson, difficulty level, memorable content, favorite parts, and topics they wished to learn in the future. Analyzing pre- and post-test results to measure progress and identify areas for further improvement. Reviewing satisfaction surveys to gauge overall student experience and satisfaction.
Impact: Regular evaluation helped me fine-tune my teaching strategies and ensure that the lessons were effective and aligned with student expectations and learning goals.

These experiences enhanced my professional knowledge by emphasizing the importance of technology integration, student-centered learning, and reflective practice in teaching. I learned to create engaging and interactive lessons that catered to diverse learning styles and needs, continually adapting and improving based on feedback and assessment results. Through this process, I developed a deeper understanding of effective teaching principles and practices, ultimately becoming a more flexible, responsive, and effective educator.
