What did you learn from designing the CALL lessons?
To begin with, I used several teaching platforms to gather topics and content for reference to design my teaching plans, such as Junyi Academy; which collects teaching resources from various teaching platforms. It includes teaching materials from Cool English, 因材網, Taipei Cooc-Cloud, etc, so it’s a very convenient tool for novice teachers like me to design my teaching plans from scratch.
Besides Junyi Academy, I used Wordwall and Kahoot for my students to practice and review. Basically, I used Wordwall for online worksheets since it makes worksheets work like mini-games that students would be more interested in practicing. Wordwall is a good means for students to practice reading at their own pace. On the other hand, Kahoot is more competitive than Wordwall. Students need to answer questions in time and they can see their scores immediately on the scoreboard.
My students were really engaged in playing the Kahoot games. Both tools worked well in my lessons. However, I prefer Wordwall since it’s way more flexible regarding question types. For students’ speaking practice in Lesson 3&4, I made a blank map using Google Jamboard so that my students could easily design their maps. Afterward, they shared the maps they created in front of the class to practice speaking the sentence patterns that were taught.
How did the design of the CALL lessons enrich your professional knowledge?
To what extent did you use ChatGPT for lesson planning? Was it useful?
Before this semester, I had bare experience in designing lessons, let along the CALL method. After completing the practicum, I learned how to effectively handle digital resources, solve technical problems, and help students engage with digital tools and materials. This experience helped me improve my teaching strategies by adjusting them based on students’ participation. During the design phase, I always dedicated many hours to researching and choosing materials that would help students learn effectively. I also learnt that gamification is an efficient way to increase students’ engagment and help students practice the content. By integrating online tools like Kahoot into English teaching, I could make my lessons more interactive.
I didn’t use ChatGPT to structure my general teaching plans. What I did was only asking ChatGPT to give some vocabulary that fits students’ English Proficiency and the topic. It generated a lot of vocabulary, then I manually selected some I thought fit students’ proficiency.
Input: I'm designing a teaching plan for students in the 8th grade in Taiwan, and the students' English proficiency is elementary. My teaching will be conducted in the CALL method. The topic of the lesson is navigation. Can you come up with some vocabulary that is suitable for the topic and students' English proficiency.
