Final Reflection

What did you learn from designing the CALL lessons?
How did the design of the CALL lessons enrich your professional knowledge?

I used PPT and, Wordwall, and scre.io in the lessons. I used PPT to teach grammar and vocabulary. I used Wordwall to help those students to review vocabulary. I used scre.io to record students’ voice when practicing speaking. During the lesson, I found that Wordwall is a great tool for students to review the vocabulary after the teaching session. Students were enjoy playing games that Wordwall provided. They could finish those tasks fast, so that I could add more activities during the course. As for scre.io, I think it is a nice tool to record students’ voice and video.

However, I found that many students couldn’t use this tool on their own after the instruction. I think it is because those students were not familiar with the computer. They typed slowly. They used the touchable screen on the computer most of the time instead of using the keyboard and the touch pad. Other than that, I think those tools are useful to help students to learn and review in class.

I also learned a lot when designing courses with ADDIE model. During the analyzing part, I found that it is important to know the students’ English proficiency beforehand. Once you know their English level, you can prepare course material that fit their level easier. During the designing & developing part, I found that ChatGPT is a great tool to brainstorming. It can also generate some easy test sheet or word bank just in a few second. That is extremely efficient.

During the implementing part, I found that it is not easy to teach those students new technology within 45 minutes. I think it is because they are not familiar with the computer that school provided. For instance, when I taught the students how to use scre.io, they couldn’t operate it by themselves after I taught them. Also, they rarely use the keyboards on their laptops. They always use the touchable screen to operate everything. During the evaluating part, I found that those students’ English-speaking ability have gotten a little bit better. Although they can’t speak English fluently now, they are not afraid to speaking English now.

As for the usage of ChatGPT, I rarely use it. Since the structure of my courses were not complicated, it is not necessary to use ChatGPT to generate a template for me. However, I used ChatGPT once for brainstorming. When I was designing the third class, I couldn’t figure out any names of places that are not too hard for junior high school students. Thus, I asked ChatGPT to generate some words that related to location, and it gave me a list just in a few second. To those who have no idea to start the project, ChatGPT is really helpful to generate some easy templates. I think it is quite nice, though I didn’t use it to help me design the whole lessen.

I’ve learned a lot from the practicum this time. The most unforgettable part is the interaction with those students. That was really interesting.
