First of all, I would like to thank Professor Sherry for arranging the practicum and providing us with pre-teaching opportunities to practice our knowledge and become familiar with the teaching environment. The course really helped me improve my teaching not only through theory but also through a practical approach. Applying the ADDIE (Assess, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) framework in designing English lessons, I learned that it is a structured process that requires effort in each and every stage.
First, understanding your students’ English proficiency level and their background knowledge is the key aspect of the Analysis stage in the ADDIE process. This initial step is crucial as it sets the foundation for all subsequent stages. By conducting a thorough analysis, I was able to tailor my lesson plans to meet the specific needs and abilities of my students. Gathering information through surveys, interviews, and diagnostic tests helped me create a comprehensive profile of my learners, which was instrumental in designing effective lessons.
Next, based on the information from the Analysis Report collected on the first day of the practicum, I moved to the Design stage, which I think is the most difficult part. This involves planning my course with appropriate content that aligns with learning objectives. I initially thought of using ChatGPT, but considering the time spent on giving clear and detailed commands for ChatGPT to generate ideas and checking if the generated results met my requirements, I decided to create my class content based on my prior teaching experience. This stage required meticulous planning and creativity to ensure that the lessons were engaging, educational, and aligned with the goals set out in the analysis stage.
In the Develop stage, I searched for materials and learning resources with the help of online tools. This involved creating or sourcing instructional materials, activities, and assessments that would support my lesson plans. For vocabulary review and warm-up sessions, I used Interacty and ClassTools to design game-based activities, which were very helpful in engaging students in the lesson. I also used YouTube for the listening part, so the students could learn the natural way of speaking through imitation or simply become aware of their pronunciation and speech while speaking. These tools and resources played a significant role in making my lessons interactive and enjoyable for the students.
One of my favorite parts was recording the lesson and writing observation notes, which emphasized the Implement stage in the ADDIE model. These two activities helped me effectively implement learning solutions for my weaknesses in communication with the students or preparing a proper environment for certain types of training activities. Recording the lessons allowed me to reflect on my teaching practices, identify areas for improvement, and make necessary adjustments in real-time. The observation notes provided valuable insights into student behavior and engagement, helping me to fine-tune my approach.
In the final stage of Evaluation, watching and evaluating my teaching, then revising my lesson, improved my way of delivering lectures to ensure a smooth running for future classes. This stage is critical as it involves assessing the effectiveness of the lesson plans and making necessary revisions based on feedback and observations. I used various evaluation methods, including student feedback, self-assessment, and peer reviews, to gain a comprehensive understanding of my teaching effectiveness. This continuous cycle of evaluation and improvement ensured that my teaching methods remained relevant and effective.
Overall, with the help of the ADDIE model in designing CALL lessons, I grew as a teacher, willing to learn and adapt to new technology in educational work to create better ways of learning and improve teaching quality. This structured approach not only enhanced my teaching skills but also provided me with a systematic way to address the diverse needs of my students, making me more confident and competent as an educator.
